Chitina on McCarthy Road to King Mountain Recreation Site on the Glenn Highway, Alaska

28 August 2010 - Saturday

Woke to overcast skies. Steve issued the command, "Time to blow this popsicle stand", so we did. First, had to squeeze through the narrow gap to return to Chitina ...

Immediately after the gap is downtown Chitina.

We avoided filling with fuel at Kenny Lake as it was too expensive, a lesson learned on our way into McCarthy. Took the Edgerton Highway to return to the Richardson Highway where we would turn northward to the Glenn Highway.

At Glenallen we didn't fill up at the gas station at the junction of the Richardson Highway and Glenn Highway. It had lineups of 5-10 vehicles at each pump. As we turned west on the Glenn Highway there was a small gas station that wasn't so busy and had plenty of room at the diesel pump for our truck/trailer.

The day was cloudy and lackluster. Even so, the fall colours made it tolerable.

As with the other Alaskan highways, there are frost heaves and dips & doodles. Although overall this section of the Glenn Highway was not so bad.

The highway passes through a popular ATV/off-road area. Being the weekend, the highway roadside stops were full of trucks and trailers, with families gearing up for rides. Needless to say, there were no quiet spots to pull off for the night!

The day was just plain dull.

At the Matanuska Glacier we checked out the campground/recreation site. It was pouring rain. The sites were small. Only one was occupied. The campground didn't strike our fancy so we decided to carry on after viewing the glacier. It was difficult to get a good picture because of the rain ...

I was having a boring day with my DSLR so practiced some photography on fireweed by the parking lot at the Matanuska Glacier.

The weather wasn't improving. It was getting late. Pulled into the King Mountain Recreation Site alongside the Matanuska River, there were some hiking trails, and there were also sites large enough for the "rig" to fit comfortably.

Apparently there is a nice view of King Mountain from here. We didn't see it though. The clouds were much too low & thick. Cost for the night was $15. I should have insisted that include a view at the very least!
