Denali National Park to Fairbanks, Alaska

08 September 2010 - Wednesday

Woke up this morning to a very sick puppy.  Tazz was not well at all; she would not eat breakfast.  Tazz was disoriented, uncomfortable and was very restless.

We weren't sure what was wrong but knew we had to head to Fairbanks in hopes of seeing a veterinarian.

I ran to the store to find out where the nearest vet was and get the phone numbers.  On the way to Fairbanks, I called a couple of clinics.  One clinic had no vets in for the day.  The other did not take out-of-state patients, even in an emergency.

Finally, the Aurora Animal Clinic agreed to take a last minute patient and booked us in at 11:00 a.m.  It rained most of the way to Fairbanks, with Steve pushing the speed limits towing the fifth wheel and despite the weather.

With the help of the GPS, we arrived only four minutes late.  The vet speculated that Tazz was having a severe allergic reaction.  The clinic administered fluids and a histamine shot, plus prescribed Benadryl and an antibiotic in case of infection.

Tazz was much perkier after the vet visit so we figured things were on the upswing.  The vet suggested we stay in the area overnight in case Tazz took a turn for the worst.

Chena Lakes Recreation Area was only 12 miles south of Fairbanks.  Figured it was a good compromise - close enough to Fairbanks but also quiet and peaceful.

This evening Tazz was in good spirits.  We enjoyed a good dog walk, she went swimming in the river, and she also napped soundly.  Her left eye continued to be red with Visine helping get rid of the irritation.

We also napped as it had been a long day.  No pictures today as we were very focused on getting to the vet and taking care of our dog.
